The latest Spider-Man release looks like a genre reset, but it is closer to a supply gap closing.
Audiences in China had not seen a Spider-Man film in cinemas since 2019. Six years of absence, then a "brand new day". A significant share of that opening weekend was built by the wait rather than by the film itself. Studios will treat it as evidence that the formula is working again. It is more like evidence that a drought ended. Sony now has to match that result without the conditions that produced it. Every subsequent release in the franchise will be measured against a benchmark that a six-year gap created.
